English. Assigment #1

When I was reading media journals of my american comrades I found couple of intresting frases and I'd like to show you them.
1. -  I would rather read a book than use a nook... - In this frase she means that instead of using her notebook she prefers to read books. She uses word "nook" as the shortening of notebook, althogh according to the Multitran dictionary "nook" means - укромный уголок, убежище, тихая гавань и т.д.
Every man, sometimes, faces difficult times and it is very important to have kind of nook in order to relax and think.
2. - I am a media junkie. - Я помешан на медиа.(Я медиа-зависимый) - The word "junkie" is used mostly by americans to denote someone's obsession and addiction to something, for examle drug-addicted. "Junkie"- наркоман, хлам, дрянь, старьевщик, помешанный.
These two junkies! I saw them stealing cakes from the supermarket.

Assignment # 1.Media files

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hriqvP-RVxc - This link will allow you to watch a fragment of very popular TV show that goes on Discovery (Science) Channel, Wormhole. While watching this show you can learn much about space, our solar system and universe.I myself like this show very much and I was pleased when one of my american collegues mentioned it in reply to my Media journal #1.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO-MWc43Ano - Another episode from another popular american show Mythbusters. The idea of the show is very intresting. They take some city legends(like alligators in the sewers), different tricks from cartoons(Tom & Jerry) or hollywood movies and try to find out, what is true and what is false, what is possible and what's not.

Assignment #1. Media files.

1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hdm69hpO-E - the video is called "Buy Me That: Helping Kids Understand Toy Ads" and is about how the commercials fool the consumers making them buy this or that thing and persuading people that they cannot live without that item.

At the beginning there is one of the examples of such a commercial - it insisitently recommends to buy a toy named "Typhoon 2" - radio controlled racer which is said to work even on the water. But as a matter of fact the battery dyes after 10 minutes use.

The result is as follows: the kids are dissapointed, the money is wasted. Do not buy everything that seems good on the screen.

2) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_-q0bAj6ME - the video is called "Consuming Kids: What Parents can Do". The children's exposure to the media environment is discussed here, some tips are given as to how to bring up a child nowadays when there are so many ads etc. around.

English. Home assignment #1.

1) pet peeve - something annoying, irritative, unpleasant (что-то непереносимое, действующее на нервы)
"As I look at my blackberry right now and see that I have 505 messages, old emails, mostly junk mail that I haven’t had the “time” to delete, which of course is a pet peeve of my husband’s."
The load music is his pet peeve. -
2) amp up - increase, excite, arouse (увеличивать, расширять)
Has the "American Dream" been amped up by the media?
The basketball team needs to amp up its defense. -
